A year of Surprises

You know the value of planning? Fail to plan and it’s as if you planned to fail, as someone said once upon a time. I know that very well… yet I’ve been puzzled because it just doesn’t seem to work in real life. Maybe in a tightly controlled business setting planning is the thing. Otherwise, so often things take a turn that no one could see coming. And sometimes the best planning and execution will not get you where you wanted. I have experienced both ends of the stick. And you perhaps did too?

This past year was full of surprises, things no one expected or could foresee (except if they were actually planned somehow by someone – who knows). I’m talking about the Covid 19 occurrence of course. And there are a lot other significant social and political occurrences worldwide who turned out unexpected.

Personally, I have not planned much of what I did this year either. I had a dream. But that was it. There was obstacles in the way of planning. And then it happened, things moved and that Christmas song, I was adamant to make it happen this year, came to life. It is in a way a miracle that seemed impossible.

The Les Miserable Covid parody was not something I have planned either… I didn’t know that’s coming. It was sudden and I hastened to do it quickly, afraid corona virus might disappear by summer and then the song won’t be relevant… if only I had known. I wish it disappeared.

I guess the creative process flows from moment to moment inspiration and works better unhinged by rigid planning. At the same time, the pressure is higher and I found myself burning the candle on both ends. I concluded that a balance of planning and free flow is what would be best. So….

Whatever this year might bring, plan for the worst, expect the best and leave the rest to God. Happy New Year 2021! (Cant believe 2020 is gone – it’s been a tremendous one!)

The Perfect Formula…

for songwriting is within everyone’s reach. Is it really? Everyone?

Everyone with a desire to do so. Everyone with a passion. And interest at the least.

How about those who don’t have an ear for it? The latest I’ve heard, it was a deaf person performing at America’s Idol or Britain’s Got Talent, or one of those shows (I’ll let you do your research).

There is a reason why I can state that you’ve got it. And this reason goes beyond that inspirational quote that everything is possible if you believe.  Ready?

The reason is that there is no perfect formula for songwriting. There is no right way or wrong way to do it. Take Despacito, the most viewed, yet missing a number of components that are believed to make a hit (again, you can do your research for more).

Last fall I’ve attending a major music industry event, with lots of workshops and sessions. There was a diverse panel of successful people – including Katie Melua – with lot’s of experience on their shoulders. It was the conclusion they arrived to before a packed room of aspiring artists, all ears and eyes, eager to hear what it takes to make a hit.

So, connect with your heart, let the music flow and don’t be afraid to experiment.

Of course, you’ve got to know the basics of how to write a song and hon your skills to a degree. Here is an awesome place to learn from the best and get invaluable feedback – follow this link.

Keep polishing your skills and never stop learning!

Hello World!

…Once upon a time there lived a drop of sound. It liked bouncing off the rocks giggling and rolling, filling the spaces with noise and echoing its sound far through valleys and passages. The wind would get tangled in it, carrying it away in waves all around the world. The frost would blow on it and turn it into ornate icy dazzling dunes for just moments before it would turn and shatter them, freeing itself to fly further.

The birds were the first to catch into its threads and weave them into chirpy songs. Some of them more skillful than others, were able to spin them in endless thrills flowing like rivers in the middle of the night, and on into the middle of the day.

The fish of the sea tried to have a go, but being under water had a hard time with it, and eventually gave up.

The sons and daughters of the earth where the ones to truly craft temples of music out of it, intertwining the threads of sounds with those of light and movement further forging the art of dance. Than they discovered the secrets of creating healing potions and mood altering potions out of sound fabric, mixing in words and a pinch of feelings drawn from their hearts. These had the power to lift the spirits up or destroy them, both for those creating them and those drinking them. They were to be taken with great care and discernment.

Than, the sons and daughters of the earth, found a way to wield a rare sort of vessels able to contain these potions unaltered. Billions of them were stored and circulated around and the secrets of making them became known at large. The power of the sound balm was there for everyone to intake.

The little drop of sounds never could dream or such destiny and that its bouncing and giggling could ever bring on such an avalanche of beauty, joy and pain.

It was just living the life of a sound.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
